Artist Overview
Sheryl Spencer is an interdisciplinary artist and recent Master of Fine Arts graduate. Her artistic practice explores themes of femininity, inherited expectations, personal reflection, and introspection. Through tactile processes incorporating combinations of printmaking, fiber, and stitching, her work reflects on mending, repair, and emotional labour.
For the McMullen Gallery, Sheryl will present a performance project centred on the mending, altering, and tailoring of adaptive clothing within the gallery space. The work echoes previous mending projects where the artist had the tender opportunity to alter garments to comfortably maneuver a colostomy bag, to fit a prosthetic breast after a mastectomy. In this way, the performance seeks to extend gestures of care both to the many different kinds of bodies who may visit the exhibition and to the clothing that holds them.
