Whether you are looking to join a cutting-edge research project, partner on technology development, or contribute your expertise to interdisciplinary innovation, this is a place where ideas move from concept to real-world impact.
Join the technology development of Smartwear Revolution led by the following 6 domains: Actuators/Fibres, Sensors, Power, Control/AI, Textile, Biomechanics and Social Justice. Positions are available in all domains:
– Textiles and Design Integration: Projects focus on designing and prototyping comfortable, serviceable smart garments by integrating sensors, actuators, and electronics directly into textile and garment structures for diverse user needs.
– Actuators/Fibres: Projects develop and manufacture advanced smart fibres and soft actuators, optimizing materials, fabrication processes, and textile compatibility for reliable, scalable integration into garments.
– Sensors: Projects create and validate textile-integrated wearable sensing technologies (e.g., pressure, strain, EMG, tilt) to monitor body motion and muscle activity.
– Control & AI: Projects design modelling, control, and AI frameworks that estimate user intent and adapt garment assistance in real time through human–garment co-simulation and predictive control.
– Power: Projects develop safe, high-energy-density, textile-compatible power systems, including solid-state batteries, wireless charging, and early-failure detection for wearable smart garments.
– Biomechanics: Projects support all domains by quantifying human movement, muscle activity, and body variability to inform garment design, sensor placement, and evaluation of assistance effectiveness.
Work at the intersection of textiles, actuators, sensors, control & AI, power, biomechanics, and human-centred design to help shape the future of wearable assistive technologies – co-created with diverse stakeholders and people with lived experience.
We are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Fellow to join the Social Justice Working Group of the Smartwear Revolution project at the University of Alberta, Canada.
This research position is part of a project on developing Smartwear, or smart garments that improve trunk support and arm and leg movement among older adults, People with Lived Experience (PLEX) with neuromuscular disabilities, and healthcare workers who are prone to sustaining injuries in their work. All research activities will be carried out in collaboration with the Social Justice Working Group Lead, Dr. Adalberto Loyola-Sanchez and Research Coordinator, Dr. Michelle Lavoie, as well as other members of the broader research team.
The Postdoctoral Fellow will:
1) Lead SJWG prioritized research areas;
2) Contribute to integrating SJWG research and findings with the other Smartwear Revolution Working Groups (the Technology and Textiles Working Group and the Arts and Design Working Group);
3) Support SJWG milestone achievement in adherence to timelines;
4) Mentor trainees, including PhD, MSc and summer students on the project, assisting them with methodologies and writing;
5) Ensure research protocols are effectively implemented;
6) Contribute to and oversee data collection, analysis and management;
7) Contribute to SJWG presentations, publications, reports; and
8) Support grant writing and funding acquisition.
The Position:
● Location: University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada
● Start Date: Mid to late October (Applications reviewed on a rolling basis until a candidate is selected for the role)
● Term: 1 year, potentially renewable depending on grant funds available
● Funding: $54,796.05 annual salary including benefits
