Artist Overview
Aynaz Raoufian is an interdisciplinary artist and PhD student in the Department of Medicine whose practice emerges from her experience as a caregiver to her sister during cancer treatment. Her work examines caregiving, memory, and the emotional weight that loss places on both the body and memory. Working across video, wearable sculptures, performances, and participatory installations, she explores how caregiving reshapes identity and how multilingual expression complicates—and sometimes protects—the act of remembering. Through interactive works and installations that create spaces for collective reflection, she considers the caregiver's body as a site of accumulation, a place where stories, emotions, and traces of care reside.
For the McMullen Gallery, Aynaz will present a video installation titled “this is the same line, under somebody else’s eyes.” The work captures the artist’s daily practice of drawing a white line under each of her eyes, an embodied record and act of preservation which she has performed every day since losing her sister to cancer.
